About Utilities

The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities provides water, sewer, drainage, and solid waste services to the residents of Sacramento. The Department is supported primarily by user charges. It works to safeguard public health, contribute to the economic development and improvement of the quality of life for all Sacramento residents. The Department works with other City Departments, Sacramento County, regional, state and federal agencies in the development and rehabilitation of urban utility infrastructure.

Water Services
Annually, the Department provides more than 45 billion gallons of water for drinking, household use, fire suppression, landscaping, and commercial use. The Sacramento and American Rivers provide 85% of this water and groundwater wells provide the remaining 15%. The Department maintains 2 water treatment plants, 8 pump stations, the city’s fire hydrants, and more than fifteen hundred miles of pipe that carry water from the river to resident’s homes and businesses.

Sewer Services
The Department of Utilities also provides service for over nine billion gallons of sewage per year, carrying it through more than 1000 miles of pipe to the Sacramento Regional County Treatment Plant where it receives primary and secondary treatment before it is discharged into the Sacramento River.

Drainage Services
The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities removes urban runoff from city streets with 45,000 storm drain inlets, hundreds of miles of pipe, 65 miles of canals and drainage ditches, over 100 pump stations and numerous detention basins, including many in the North Natomas area. Through this system, water is moved away from homes and businesses and into creeks, lakes, and rivers.

Flood Control Services
Utilities also works year round to maintain pumps, pipelines, canals, and over 18 miles of levee along the Sacramento and American Rivers to provide flood protection during heavy rainfall. In emergency situations, the Department works with other city, county, state and federal agencies to help ensure the safety of the citizens of Sacramento.

Solid Waste Services
The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities also provides solid waste services to its residents. Annually, the Department collects garbage, recycling and green waste from residents of the City. The Department also provides street sweeping services throughout the City.
